Weightlifting Team for Commonwealth Games 2022 – Weightlifting is one of the sporting events where India fancy their medal chances. India is set to send a 15 member weightlifting contingent for upcoming Commonwealth Games which are slated from 28th July to 8th August in Birmingham, England.
2021 Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu will lead the team into the tournament.
The squad of 15 members exclude coaches and support staff. The contingent includes 8 men and 7 women who will compete in the 15 weight divisions.
According to a few reports, Earlier, Indian Weightlifting Federation had decided to send former world junior bronze medalist Jhilli Dalabehera in the 49 Kg category and Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu in the 55 kg category. The decision of IWF was to maximise the medal prospects.
But due to change in entry rules by the International Weightlifting Federation, things drastically changed. The rule change dented the chances of Mirabai Chanu competing in 55kg. Now, Mirabai will represent India in the 49 kg category. While Jhilli Dalabehera misses the CWG bus due to no slot available. India will go unrepresented in the 64 kg category at Birmingham.
